By Courage and Faith

Resurgam (Latin): to overcome, to come back renewed, to take steps so as to surge back, to rise again after defeat or disappearance, to rise up after subsidence, to rise up having caved in, to rise up having abated, to rise up having died away, to rise up having diminished, to rise up having ceased from activity, to rise up, having become less.

To rise up, having become less: this is what I experienced often whilst teaching physically disabled pupils. Their attitude encouraged me.

Likewise, the attitude of parents at the ‘Centre for Special Children’ in Punjab, northern India, as well as that of the therapists working there, inspired me. Similarly, meeting adults with physical disabilities, as well as those with mental challenges, emboldened me.

Thus, this book was born. It is possible to live life with disabilities: be encouraged, be inspired, be emboldened.

About the Author

Vera Renata is a passionate teacher. (albeit retired, now).
Languages are her interest, being fluent in three; and having been very fortunate to have been able to teach all three, she still continues this via extra lessons from home. For her, teaching a child to read with comprehension is paramount, because this skill opens the door to myriad other skills, opportunities and vocations.

She was a teacher for more than a decade at a school for physically disabled in Johannesburg.  Here, she saw first-hand what true courage, determination and grit could look like – both from the point of view of the parents, and then certainly from classroom interaction with her pupils.

This became the inspiration for her book: wanting to share with others the valiant attitude of some of her past pupils as they tried to make the very best of the hand they had been dealt.

To quote from her book: “Our school stresses that you don’t have to win, but you should participate to the very best of your ability; if you have done that, then you have done well!” (chapter 8, SPORT, Pg 74) Leviticus 19:14 Do not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block in front of the blind, but fear your God. I am the Lord. (THE BIBLE)
